This past February my wife Elsa and I decided to try and buy a home. One of my partners let me know that there was a house a block away from him in Ridgefield Park. We went to see the house and decided to call the number on the sign. Are we glad we did! We didn’t like that one so you said you had more to show us. That was the start of our headache, yours and ours. LOL.
For the next several months you continued to show us houses throughout several counties and never gave up. We are forever grateful for your effort and persistence. On one fateful day in May, you happened to come across a foreclosure which had just been listed that very same day. Your call was exactly what we had been waiting for.
We went to see the house which was destroyed by water damage and fell in love. Large property, on a great street and we pictured raising our kids there. Being a former contractor, I saw the potential this house had becoming a home. We put in our offer on the spot and you even drove all the way down to my job for me to sign the original contract.
Here’s where my headaches turned into a migraine and a nightmare! As you know the house was bank owned and Bank of America made my life a living hell. Paperwork was constantly being lost by them ad it took months for us to close. Numerous times during this ordeal your phone rang and I was on the other end bitching and moaning.
You listened, wouldn’t let me give up and even made numerous calls to correct the problems. For that, Elsa and I will be forever in your debt. As you know we finally closing on OUR HOME and I have even started to tear into the house for renovations. We’re hoping that I can finish the renovation and we might even be able to celebrate Christmas in our new home this year.

I first met you in 2006 when you brought a client to my home which was listed with RE/MAX. You were very encouraging and just confident my house would sell. However it did not and I pulled the listing after 6 months.

I did not want to leave my children’s father because of the “picture-perfect” family idea. I wanted the house with the picket fence. Through much physical, emotional, mental abuse, he always apologized and I believed him. After one finial incident, I said to myself, “this was enough, no more. Is this what I want my children to accept in their lives? I called Shelter Our Sisters. They took me in, gave me shelter and offered me counseling and the support I needed.
I realized I did not want my children to repeat the cycle of violence and SOS helped me do that. My counselors suggested I consider a career which would provide stability for my family. With the support of my SOS mentor and the staff, I am currently making huge progress while enrolled at Bergen County Community College. I have a 3.9 grade average and as just awarded with an associate degree in Sonography!
The above story includes snippets of a speech recently presented at the 2009 SOS Awards Dinner by a current SOS client. With your support she and her children are breaking the cycle of domestic violence.

From September 2007 through November 2007, Arwa Abbassi was the sole Realtor that Debbie and I were engaged with in the search for a new home. Arwa began the process with us by asking many questions as to our likes and dislikes of home style(s), must vs. nice to have’s in our new home, what our preferred area of location were, as well as appreciating what would constitute ‘deal breakers’ in our decision process.
On a weekly basis, Arwa would update us on new listings that met our criteria, what she felt may be potential upside as well as downfalls to each property, as well as to point out home that met our search criteria in style but that were potentially a bit out of our search range pricing, all the while not trying to up-sell us.
After taking is to see about 25 homes over a course of 3 months, and never giving up on the search process, Arwa finally found the perfect home for our needs and life style in November 2007. Due in part to her follow up with the home’s seller, demonstrating to them that we were committed, solid buyers and that we put forth our best offer, the home’s seller actually accepted out bid over a higher rival bid.
Arwa remained actively engaged with us throughout the entire closing process with regard to making sure we kept to and met critical timelines, lined up necessary appointments, secured necessary documentation, provided us with service recommendations, et.al., all the way through to the actual closing meeting with the attorney January 2008.
